The Bite of the Viper

Thoughts by Pastor Brad...

Proverbs 22:31-32 says; “Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper.” Alcohol consumption can destroy families and lives more than smoking and some illegal recreational drugs. I don’t advocate the use or consumption of any three of these items, but it seems that alcohol is the one that is the most socially acceptable. Some tell me that people drank in the Bible and so it is a license for us to do the same. My response is that people did drink in the Bible, but it does not make it God’s ideal plan for our lives. God calls us to a life of full surrender. If impairment begins with the first drink according to research, why would I want to be impaired at all from God’s work in my life? There is a push among Adventist Christians to accept social drinking, and I am not in favor of this movement. God gave Adventists a great health message almost 150 years ago, and it is now being proven as beneficial. There is no health benefit to alcohol consumption. In fact, research has found some real negative results of even casual drinking. Let’s not allow the viper of alcohol to bite our connection with God and our families.
