Thoughts from Pastor Roly...
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
This passage serves as the thesis for the entire book. It is based on two major ideas: Fear of the Lord, and Wisdom. Fear of the Lord does not mean that you are afraid of God. Instead Solomon states that the beginning of knowledge is reverence towards God. In other words, do we take God seriously in our lives? If we live our lives according to his will, and we keep his commandments, then that shows that we fear the Lord because we are demonstrating that we take him seriously and revere him. Solomon argues in turn, that once we take him seriously, our lives will receive something, a power that is called the chokmah or wisdom. Wisdom is represented in the book of Proverbs as a woman called “Lady Wisdom”. She is not intelligence, or someone possessing higher IQ levels, instead she is a gift from God. She is given to builders, administrators, religious leaders and it encompasses our moral, religious and political sphere. Thus when we reverse God or fear him, his commandments, teachings will impart wisdom in our lives and help us live the best version of our life possible. It does not mean of course that life will not be without pain and suffering, but as a GENERAL rule when we follow God’s love and have his laws written in our hearts, things for the most part will work out great and we will have a happy and fulfilling life. Fools despise wisdom , because they let their desires, their laws govern them, they do not fear the Lord. I invite you church to fear the Lord and follow him from the heart and he will reward you with something worth more than gold or riches: Lady Wisdom.
