Hebrews 12:1-2 says; Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Many of you know the Didenko family. Dima shared with me his experience of running the Marine marathon in Washington D.C. recently. Dima was challenged by driving rain. Can you imagine running 26.2 miles in heavy rain? Dima needed to stay focused as the rain soaked his body for almost four hours. Paul shares in our text today that as we must run with endurance the race of faith after laying aside everything that slows us down. You would be hard-pressed to run a marathon with a heavy backpack. God wants us to give all our baggage to Him and He will cast them into the depths of the sea. As we are running, we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith. We will finish the race with confidence when we focus on the Savior. Peter was fine walking on water until he took his eyes off the Master. Let’s run the race of faith with confidence in Christ today. Give your burdens to Jesus as you are filled with the Spirit who will give you the strength and focus to not just finish the race but finish strong in the Lord.
